How to Find Slope from Two Points
Slope measures how much y changes for each unit change in x.
m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁)
- Label the points: (1, 3) and (5, 11).
- Subtract y-values: 11 − 3 = 8.
- Subtract x-values in the same order: 5 − 1 = 4.
- Divide: 8 ÷ 4 = 2.
Answer: slope = 2. y rises 2 units for every 1 unit increase in x.
Slope types
- Positive: rises left to right.
- Negative: falls left to right.
- Zero: horizontal.
- Undefined: vertical.
